Agape: The only way love can last a lifetime is if it’s unconditional

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace”

I came across this adage in a newspaper and I personally believe that the power of love is the main driving force, that is very much capable of spreading peace all over the world. There have been many examples throughout history that clearly shows that if love is used as an agent for change, the result would be more than sufficient. Be it in the form of ‘satyagraha’ by Gandhi (‘satya’ means truth and ‘agraha’ means a force) or the service of Mother Teresa to “the poorest of the poor” by founding the Missionaries of charity.

Gandhi followed the path of non-violence (ahimsa) and emerged as a victor. He always believed that the ethic of love would only break the strong and rigid chain of hatred. Fasting was his most powerful weapon, his determined approach of indefinite fasting shattered his opponent’s strong and violent approach. Throughout his life, he lived for the people (marched for their rights and freedom without inquiring about their caste, creed, religion etc.) and his attitude which was to drive out the force of evil rather than the evil itself is way beyond appreciation. During the days of his struggle for justice, he left no stone unturned to inspire and motivate people (Universe is always on the side of justice; In our struggle for justice, we have cosmic companionship)

Words are not enough to describe the extent of love and care with which Mother Teresa embraced the world. She lent her services to the needy and the poor (To serve the poor is to serve the God); she believed that the love of god is operating in the human heart. She stood for the poor, for the child and for the people from every walk of life. Here also a love(agape) rules, it is the recognition of the fact that all lives are intertwined and in course of harming others, we are harming ourselves. So, if you want to be loved, start loving others.

The form of love expressed here is Agape. It is the unconditional, non-judgemental and greatest form of love (universal, sacrificial, purely spontaneous, unmotivated and satisfying in nature). Love(agape) knows no discrimination and distinction, it is love in action which preserves and create a harmonious community to live in.

To sum it all it is the love that God has for his people and love that knows no boundary and love that is pure and eternal.

Have a nice day!
